18 KH-179 have been purchased by Indonesian Army in 2011. They have been split on three batteries: two on Borneo Island, near Malaysia border and one on the North of Sumatra island, at the entrance of Malacca strait. The KH-179 howitzer was developed for South Korea Army in 1982 to replace the M114 155mm howitzer. KH-179 is much lighter than the M114 and its maintenance time has been reduced. KH-179 can fire two type of ammunition: a high explosive munition (range of 18 kilometers) and a rocket assisted projectile (range up to 30km. The new 155mm ammunition used in the KH-179 is compatible with standard NATO 155mm ammunition. |
