Denmark's proactive engagement on the international security stage has been particularly evident in recent times. Following the conflict in Ukraine and the ongoing Russian invasion, Denmark exhibited its unwavering solidarity by providing its CAESAR 8x8 artillery pieces to Ukraine. This benevolent gesture aimed to strengthen Ukraine's defense capabilities in the face of an escalating crisis. However, this noble act came with a trade-off, leading Denmark to initiate a new phase of fortifying its defense infrastructure.
In a poignant statement, Danish Defense Minister Jakob Ellemann-Jensen acknowledged that the donation of CAESAR artillery to Ukraine was a vital response to Ukraine's urgent requirements during a tumultuous time. However, this act of support led to a strategic gap in Denmark's own artillery resources, necessitating swift and pragmatic action.
Signed in March, the 252 million US dollar contract between Elbit Systems and Denmark encompasses the supply of 19 Autonomous Truck Mounted Howitzer System (ATMOS) self-propelled artillery systems and 8 Precise and Universal Launching System (PULS) rocket launch systems. The distribution of this equipment is scheduled to be completed by the end of 2024.
The ATMOS, or Autonomous Truck Mounted Howitzer System, is an advanced artillery engineer. The ATMOS boasts a modular design, compatible with a range of tactical mobility vehicles such as 8x8 or 6x6 trucks. The Danish Armed Forces have chosen the 8x8 RMMV platform as the basis for their ATMOS solution due to its high tactical mobility and compatibility.
Mounted on this truck chassis, the system is equipped with a 155mm/52-caliber howitzer, a configuration that combines both maneuverability and enhanced firepower. Additionally, the ATMOS is armed with an automatic fire control system, enabling the launch of NATO-certified 155mm projectiles at a range of over 40 kilometers.
Additionally, the incorporation of an embedded suite of advanced electronics allows for precise and accurate navigation and operation. This results in enhanced accuracy, increased firepower, and reduced crew size, establishing the ATMOS as a fifth-generation gun that is operational in artillery forces around the world.
In conjunction with the ATMOS, the PULS rocket launch system bolsters Denmark's defense capabilities. Abbreviated as Precision, Ultra-long-range, and Lethality System (PULS), this autonomous rocket launcher has been meticulously engineered to meet the demands of modern battlefields. Notably, the PULS system features specialized PODS (Precision, Ultra-long-range, and Lethality System) that facilitate the deployment of various rockets, including 18 Accular 122mm and 10 Accular 160mm rockets, 4 EXTRA rockets, and 2 Predator Hawk rockets.
This adaptability significantly augments the readiness of the Danish armed forces to effectively address a range of potential scenarios. The PULS system is characterized by its capacity to engage targets at distances of up to 35km (Accular 122mm), 40km (Accular 160mm), 150km (EXTRA), and 300km (Predator Hawk).
The compatibility of the ATMOS system with advanced tactical mobility vehicles, including the 8x8 RMMV platform, extends Denmark's tactical options, enabling seamless integration for various mission profiles.
