Defense Minister Troels Lund Poulsen expressed concern over the serious situation in the Red Sea, emphasizing the crucial importance of safe navigation in the area for both Danish and international shipping and regional development.

Denmark already contributes to maritime security in the region and aims to increase its contribution with the deployment of a Danish frigate. The government plans to present a resolution proposal to the Folketing (Danish Parliament) in 2024.

The United States has established Operation Prosperity Guardian (OPG) in the Red Sea and the Gulf of Aden. OPG operates under the existing U.S.-led multinational maritime coalition, Combined Maritime Forces (CMF).

Denmark currently contributes three staff officers to the CMF, including one staff officer to OPG. The government will propose to contribute a frigate to OPG, which could be deployed from late January.

The Royal Danish Navy's fleet includes frigates like the Iver Huitfeldt-Class, which are central to its naval capabilities. These frigates are equipped for various roles including anti-air and anti-submarine warfare.

The Absalon-Class support ships serve multiple functions, including combat and humanitarian aid, while the Thetis-Class frigates are versatile, used for surveillance and international military operations.
