This development comes amidst the ongoing territorial dispute over the Essequibo region between Venezuela and Guyana. Venezuela views the arrival of the warship as a matter of concern, citing potential tensions in the region. The statement also refers to the Argyle Declaration, which is intended as a framework for dialogue and resolution in the territorial dispute.
The presence of the HMS Trent has been linked by Venezuelan authorities to broader geopolitical activities, including those by the United States Southern Command. Venezuela perceives these activities as potentially impacting regional stability and peace.
Exclusive Ecomonic Zone
The territorial dispute between Venezuela and Guyana over the Essequibo region and the surrounding maritime area has a complex and longstanding history. The roots of the conflict can be traced back to the 19th century, during the time when the borders of South American nations were being defined.
In more recent times, the discovery of significant oil and gas reserves in the region, particularly in the offshore Stabroek Block, has intensified the dispute. This area is claimed by both countries and is rich in resources, significantly impacting the economic prospects of Guyana.
Venezuela has made various claims and actions over the years that challenge Guyana's sovereignty and control over these resources. For instance, Venezuela has objected to Guyana's offshore oil exploration and has even held a referendum on the Essequibo region, which has been criticized and questioned by international bodies and Guyana.
