The new frigate, named “Jerônimo de Albuquerque,” is the second vessel in Brazil’s Tamandaré-class frigate program, which aims to build a total of four MEKO® class ships.
The Tamandaré program stands out as Brazil’s most innovative naval construction initiative, leveraging local expertise and a technology transfer facilitated by thyssenkrupp Marine Systems. In 2020, thyssenkrupp Marine Systems acquired the shipyard in Itajaí.
The keel laying of the frigate with construction number F201 continues the momentum from 2023, when thyssenkrupp Marine Systems delivered the third high-performance frigate to the Egyptian Navy and launched the fourth frigate, now being completed at Egypt’s Alexandria Shipyard.
About the Tamandare class
Each Tamandaré-class frigate will have a displacement of 3,500 tons, a length of 107.2 meters, and a maximum speed of 28 knots. The ships are designed for multi-mission roles, capable of anti-aircraft, anti-surface, and anti-submarine warfare.
They will be equipped with the Sea Ceptor missile system for air defense, MANSUP anti-ship missiles, and Mark 46 torpedoes for anti-submarine operations. Additionally, the frigates will feature a Leonardo OTO Melara 76mm naval gun and a SeaSnake close-in weapon system (CIWS).
These frigates will also incorporate advanced sensor systems, including Raytheon X- and S-band radars and Safran's Paseo XLR optronic sights.
