The Frégate de Défense et d'Intervention (FDI), also known as the Frégate de Taille Intermédiaire (FTI) or medium-size frigate, is a new class of French frigates designed by Naval Group for the French Navy and export customers such as Greece. These frigates are designed to be highly versatile, capable of performing various roles including air defense, anti-submarine warfare, and surface warfare.

The FDI frigates feature advanced digital technologies and modular architectures, which enable them to be easily upgraded to counter evolving threats. They are equipped with the SEA FIRE radar, the SENTINEL electronic warfare system, and the CAPTAS-4 compact towed-array sonar for long-range submarine detection.

France plans to build five FDI frigates, with the first expected to be delivered in 2024. The Lorient shipyard is a critical site for this project, optimized to deliver two ships per year starting from 2025.

Greece has ordered three FDI HN frigates, with an option for a fourth. These ships will be delivered with additional capabilities compared to their French counterparts. The Greek FDI HN frigates will include enhanced armaments such as the RAM Block 2B missiles, additional Aster 30 SAMs, and sophisticated electronic warfare systems. The construction is ahead of schedule to expedite delivery, with the first Greek FDI frigate, Kimon, launched in October 2023 and set for delivery in 2025.
