Description

Global military operations have seen the demand increase for a vehicle that bridges the gap between deployable light forces, with their inherent low survivability, and more survivable heavy forces that are difficult to deploy and have high life cycle costs. PIRANHA 5 has been developed in response to this need and takes advantage of the latest technologies to deliver class-leading survivability, capacity and mobility with low through-life costs and inherent growth capacity. The Piranha V is developed by the Swiss subsidiary company of General Dynamics European Land Systems. The Piranha V was unveiled during the International Defense Exhibition in Paris, Eurosatory 2010. A contract between GDELS and the Danish Defence Acquisition and Logistic Organization (DALO) for 309 PIRANHA 5s was signed in December 2015 and announced to the public in January 2016. In April 2017, Spain has announced a plan to acquire 348 "Piranha V" 8x8 wheeled armored fighting vehicles from General Dynamics European Land Systems (GDELS) in the first phase of purchase. In a second phase, Spain could acquire around 1,000 vehicles for the Spanish army. According to a statement published on January by GDELS (General Dynamics European Land Systems), the Company will deliver up to 227 PIRANHA 5 wheeled armored vehicles in six different configurations to the Romanian Armed Forces. In March 2019, GDELS has delivered the first Piranha V to the Royal Danish Army. On November 6, 2019, General Dynamics European Land Systems (GDELS) has started the production of PIRANHA 5 8x8 armored vehicles at the factory of its strategic Romanian partner Uzina Mecanică București (UMB).

  • Design and protection
The PIRANHA 5 sets a new survivability benchmark for the wheeled armored combat vehicle class and provides the highest levels of mines, improvised explosive device (IED), and ballistic protection. PIRANHA 5 has a next-generation, full coverage, modular survivability system that has been integrated in the vehicle design from the concept stage. This system provides unparalleled all-around protection, particularly in the wheel well area that has traditionally been vulnerable to IEDs on wheeled armored combat vehicles. The entire survivability system has been designed to be replaced or upgraded through life to take advantage of new survivability technologies as they mature or to counter emergent threats. PIRANHA 5 also features a range of tailorable survivability kits that allow the tactical commander to adapt the vehicle in theatre. This ensures the vehicle's suitability for operation in complex terrain against aggressive threats such as IED EFPs, or through rapid reconfiguration, allowing PIRANHA 5 to undertake roles requiring the highest levels of mobility and agility such as formation reconnaissance. The vehicle will be launched with the SAAB LEDS active protection system integrated on the Kongsberg remote-controlled turret to demonstrate one of the many survivability enhancements that General Dynamics European Land Systems and its partners have developed for PIRANHA 5. In addition to these modular systems, substantial advances have been made in crew ergonomics, energy-absorbing seating and occupant restraint systems that further improve the survivability of the PIRANHA 5 when facing the threats of today and tomorrow.

  • Mobility

The PIRANHA 5 uses a 8x8 chassis with a MTU 6V199 diesel engine. The PIRANHA 5 features the latest height adjustable McPherson strut suspension technology which endows the vehicle with an extraordinary level of cross-country mobility. This suspension in combination with the high output powerpack, fourth axle steering and integrated driver support systems to ensure that PIRANHA 5 has the highest level of terrain accessibility and is the most agile wheeled armored combat vehicle available today. The PIRANHA 5 can run at a maximum speed of 100 km/h with an autonomy of 550 Km (mix of road/off-road driving).

  • Combat Equipment

The PIRANHA 5 is equipped with numerous other systems that enhance vehicle performance and flexibility such as the digital CAN backbone, fuel-efficient drive train technology, integrated heating, air-conditioning and NBC protection system, and the 120 kW Inline Starter/Generator (ISG). As an example of the unrivaled performance PIRANHA 5 provides, the ISG generates the power for onboard systems while simultaneously providing up to 100 kW AC exportable power to sustain military or civilian infrastructure. The ISG also has the growth capability to recovery brake energy for re-use to boost the vehicle power output to 700 hp while at the same time reducing fuel consumption.
