The 2023 Military Balance reports that Chile possesses 140 Leopard 2A4 tanks. These were originally acquired as used units from Germany in 2007 and subsequently modified to the Leopard 2A4CHL variant. Tailored to meet the specific operational needs of the Chilean army, these tanks feature advanced communications systems and enhancements for operating under extreme conditions, including high altitudes.

The Leopard 2A4 is a main battle tank originally developed by Germany in the late 1970s and introduced into service in the early 1980s. Known for its formidable blend of firepower, protection, and mobility, the Leopard 2A4 features a 120mm smoothbore cannon, advanced armor protection, and a powerful engine allowing for high speeds and excellent cross-country performance. It has undergone various upgrades over the years to enhance its combat effectiveness and survivability, making it one of the most respected and widely used tanks in the world.

The modernization initiative will see the integration of advanced technologies into the Chilean army Leopard 2A4 tanks to enhance their combat and sensor systems. A key component of the upgrade is the replacement of the existing fire control system with ASELSAN's state-of-the-art VOLKAN system, designed to improve targeting accuracy and speed.

Additional firepower will be provided by the integration of SARP-type Remote Controlled Weapon Stations (RCWS). This system allows for the operation of weaponry from a protected position inside the vehicle, significantly enhancing crew safety and operational flexibility.

The optical capabilities of the gunner will be upgraded through the incorporation of a new sight from ASELSAN’s KARTALGÖZÜ series. This enhancement aims to improve target acquisition and engagement efficiency in various combat scenarios.

To bolster the tanks' situational awareness, new laser warning systems will be installed. These systems are crucial for detecting and responding to threats from laser-guided weaponry. Additionally, the commander’s capabilities will be augmented with a new electro-optical system, facilitating superior battlefield command and control.

The modernization project will be carried out in phases, with a second phase planned to integrate ASELSAN’s hard kill Active Protection System (APS). This system is designed to detect and neutralize incoming threats before they can strike the tank, providing an additional layer of defense against anti-tank weapons.

This modernization contract not only strengthens the operational capabilities of the Chilean Army but also solidifies ASELSAN’s position as a leading provider of military technology solutions on the global stage. The upgrade of the Leopard 2A4 tanks with cutting-edge technology underscores the growing trend of modernizing existing military assets to meet contemporary battlefield requirements.
