ATK Precision Guidance Kit transforms 155mm artillery projectiles in GPS-guided precision weapons
At AUSA 2014, the Association of the United States Army conference and exhibition which takes place every October in Washington D.C., ATK presents its Precision Guidance Kit (PGK) which transforms existing 155mm high explosive artillery projectiles or 120mm mortar ammunitions into affordable, GPS-guided precision weapons.

Today’s battlefield is ever-changing in terms of terrain and engagement criteria. Reducing the risk of friendly and civilian casualties and collateral damage to infrastructure is critical. This combination of constraints coupled with the performance of conventional artillery munitions has often limited the commander’s options and, sometimes, has taken artillery out of the fight.

To remain relevant, artillery must be accurate, responsive and flexible. The Precision Guidance Kit provides the necessary precision and flexibility and at a price that permits its use in tactically significant quantities, as well as for training.

ATK’s Precision Guidance Kit (PGK) transforms existing 155mm high explosive artillery projectiles into affordable, GPS-guided precision weapons. PGK provides maneuver forces with an organic, precision capability that is highly responsive and available around the clock and in all weather conditions. With a circular error probable (CEP) of less than 50 meters, PGK fills an effectiveness gap between conventional artillery and smart munitions.

This low-cost, highly reliable, fuze-sized guidance kit installs in the projectile fuze well and also provides traditional fuze functions for height-of-burst and point detonation.

The Precision Guidance Kit (PGK) is also available for 120mm mortar ammunitions under the ATK name of XM395.

Based on ATK’s Precision Guidance Kit for 155 mm artillery projectiles, XM395 combines GPS guidance and directional control surfaces into a package that replaces standard fuzes, transforming existing 120 mm mortar bodies into precision-guided munitions. This design-leveraging approach has reduced the timeline and costs associated with fielding a new munition.

The XM395 is compatible with all 120 mm, smoothbore mortar systems. It provides precision guidance capability for existing M933/934 mortar munitions. This precision mortar leverages mature subsystem technologies. The MGK takes full advantage of the existing U.S. Army industrial base, ammunition manufacturing facilities and supply chain to ensure low-risk, rapid delivery to support rapid fielding.

The XM395 provides the precision capability necessary for contemporary operating environments. It expands mortar system capabilities from area suppression to responsive, precision engagement and is reliable in a high-G tube launch environment.
