VIGIL AAD

Automatic Activation Device for parachute (Belgium)

Vigil AAD Automatic Activation Device of parachute for military units and airborne troops 925 001

Description

The Vigil AAD is an electronic-pyrotechnic device that automatically opens the main or reserve parachute container at a preset altitude or after a preset time. AADs are typically used to open the reserve parachute container at a preset altitude if the descent rate exceeds a preset activation speed. The Vigil AAD system is automatically triggered when the user has not opened his or her parachute, or that the parachute is malfunctioning and is not slowing the descent rate sufficiently.

Technical Data

Technology
The VIGIL AAD (Automatic Activation Device) Military” is without a doubt the best enhanced multimode AAD choice for military free-fall operations and can be used in HA and VHA condition for HAHO and HALO missions including a 3D G sensor registration. The VIGIL AAD will calculate permanently the left-over time to reach the activation altitude in function of the chosen setting and values in STANDARD and QNH settings (Alt Corr, pressure and elevation).
VIGIL AAD Types
The Vigil AAD for military use is available in three models, the «VIGIL EAAD Military”, “VIGIL II+c Military” and the «VIGIL II+c Military Single Mode”.
- VIGIL EAAD Military:
It has 2 selectable pre-defined settings: “STANDARD” and “QNH”. It has 3 programmable activation modes: “PRO”, “TANDEM” and “BUNDLE”. This device in STANDARD Setting can be used for standard sport disciplines. In STANDARD setting, the unit will recalibrate automatically in regard of ground zero level pression, it can be used for training missions and will switch off after 14 hours. In QNH setting for Operational/Tactical missions, the VIGIL can be set to the landing altitude in the air (pressurized cabin or not) and it will automatically switch off after 24 hours.
- VIGIL II+c Military:
It has 3 selectable pre-defined settings in: “STANDARD”, “QNH” and “TIME”. It has 3 programmable activation modes in: “PRO”, “TANDEM” and “BUNDLE”. This device in STANDARD Setting can be used for standard sport disciplines. In STANDARD setting, the unit will recalibrate automatically in regard of ground zero level pression, it can be used for training missions and will switch off after 14 hours. In QNH setting for Operational/Tactical missions, the VIGIL can be set to the landing altitude or in TIME setting in the air (pressurized cabin or not) and it will automatically switch off after 24 hours.
- VIGIL II+c Military Single Mode:
It is without a doubt the best single Pro Mode AAD choice for military free-fall operations and can be used in HA and VHA conditions for HAHO and HALO missions. The VIGIL will calculate permanently the left-over time to reach the activation altitude in function of the chosen setting and values (Alt Corr, pressure and elevation). When the activation altitude of 1500 ft (450 m), or lower, is reached by the jumper at a vertical speed above 78 mph (35 m/sec), the cutter(s) of the Vigil® will fire and cut the closing loop(s) of the reserve parachute container.
Operational Use
The VIGIL AAD is designed to activate in emergency situations where the parachutist is not able to perform the proper procedures. It is an independent back up safety system that will not interfere or restrict the normal parachuting activity. In case of failure to open a parachute, the VIGIL AAD will activate the cutter system that severs the closing loop of the reserve container and allows to begin the reserve deployment sequence.
Once the door opens and you leave the plane, the Vigil AAD will calculate the time left over before reaching the activation altitude (for example 1100 ft in PRO mode), by continuously measuring your falling speed and your altitude. The Vigil AAD takes into consideration the speed variation during the free fall and recalculates every 1/8 of a second the time left to reach the activation altitude. When you reach the activation altitude (time = 0) and if you are still falling at a speed above 35m/sec, the VIGIL AAD will instantaneously activate the cutter to allow your reserve parachute to deploy. This patented method ensures a very accurate activation altitude (+/- 60 feet).
The Vigil EAAD has been designed to resist a water immersion of 2 meter for a maximum of 24 hours. The VIGIL AAD is waterproof (IP 68) and can withstand water immersion of max. 1,8 meters for a maximum of 24 hours. The Vigil EAAD doesn’t need filter replacement. It has a built-in stainless steel air filter which does need to be replaced after contact with water.
Features
On standard mode, the set mode will be permanently on-screen. On request, modes and values are factory programmable to meet specific custom operational needs.
There is no mandatory maintenance return to the manufacturer required. The “Control Unit” & “Cutter Unit” are field replaceable thanks to the push-pull connector.
The “High Energy Lithium Dual Battery Pack” replacement is required if a “Bat Low” or “Bat Rpl” message is displayed on a screen during the startup or after 12 years of use from the DOM (max operational lifetime). Battery replacement must be performed at a VIGIL RMA Center or in an approved military VIGIL service center.
For the VIGIL EAAD, up to 2 hours of jump data (or last 96 jumps and 225 sessions) are stored in the on-board memory. It is possible for all users to download the recorded data. Logging up to 50,000 ft (15.240 m). For the other models, Up to 16 minutes of jump data (or last 16 jumps) are stored
in the on-board memory. It is possible for all users to download the recorded data, by using our “IR Download Box + Software” to your PC.
