New US aid package for Ukraine includes armored vehicles - air defense systems - anti-tank weapons


The U.S. Department od Defense announced on June 27, 2023, a new security assistance package worth $500 million for Ukraine. During a press briefing, Air Force Brig. Gen. Pat Ryder, the Pentagon Press Secretary, reiterated the United States' resolute dedication to Ukraine as he unveiled an aid package aimed at strengthening Ukraine's defense capabilities. Since the Russian invasion in February 2022, the Biden administration has already committed over $40.5 billion in security assistance to Ukraine. This latest aid package marks the 41st equipment deployment from the Department of Defense (DOD) inventories to Ukraine since August 2021.

The comprehensive assistance encompasses a variety of vital resources intended to bolster Ukraine's offensive and counter-offensive operations. Noteworthy provisions in this aid package consist of extra armored vehicles, anti-armor systems, and essential munitions. Furthermore, the aid will facilitate the deployment of U.S.-supplied Patriot air defense systems and 38 High Mobility Artillery Rocket Systems, enhancing Ukraine's defensive capabilities.

To counter armored threats, Ukraine will receive anti-tank weapons, including Tube-Launched, Optically-Tracked, Wire-Guided (TOW) missiles and among others 10000 missiles Javelin anti-tank systems. These weapons will provide Ukraine with precision and long-range capabilities to effectively neutralize enemy armored vehicles.

In terms of mobility and troop protection, Ukraine will benefit from 154 Bradley Infantry Fighting Vehicles, enhancing its infantry combat capability, as well as 125 Stryker Armored Personnel Carriers, providing increased protection during combat operations.

Artillery support will be strengthened with additional ammunition for the High Mobility Artillery Rocket Systems (HIMARS), enabling Ukraine to enhance its long-range strike capabilities. Additionally, Ukraine will receive 155mm and 105mm artillery rounds, significantly boosting its firepower on the battlefield.

The assistance package will also include various equipment such as Patriot air defense systems with additional munitions, 1700 missiles Stinger anti-aircraft systems, AT-4 anti-armor systems, and anti-armor rockets. Furthermore, high-speed Anti-radiation missiles (HARMs) and precision aerial munitions will be provided to enhance Ukraine's striking capabilities.

Military personnel will benefit from new demining equipment and systems for obstacle clearing, as well as small arms and over 22 million rounds of small arms ammunition and grenades to bolster individual firepower. For improving night vision and surveillance, Ukraine will also receive thermal imagery systems and night vision devices.

Lastly, to support vehicle maintenance and repair, testing and diagnostic equipment, spare parts, generators, and other field equipment will be provided.

The provision of these various types of armaments will significantly enhance Ukraine's defense capabilities against Russian aggression, enabling the country to effectively confront ground and armored threats with greater efficiency. The primary objective of this assistance is twofold: to strengthen Ukraine's deterrence and response capabilities, thereby safeguarding its territory and population from enemy attacks, and to provide support for its counteroffensive operations. The latest security assistance package serves as a clear demonstration of the unwavering commitment of the United States to Ukraine's security and underlines the resolute determination to assist Ukraine in confronting Russian aggression.
