The
NTW-20 is a South African anti-materiel rifle or
large-calibre sniper rifle, developed by Denel's
Mechem division in the 1990s. The weapon was designed
by Tony Neophytou and intended for deployment against
a wide variety of targets, including parked aircraft,
telecommunication masts, power lines, missile sites,
radar installations, refineries, satellite dishes,
gun emplacements, bunkers and personnel, using a
range of specialized projectiles. The NTW-20 in
20 x 110 calibre is a new version of the weapon.
The accurate high explosive capability makes it
extremely effective in the counter-sniping role,
where indiscriminate fire from weapons such as mortars
and rocket launchers is completely unacceptable.
The new NTW 20 are now offered in 20 x 110 mm Hispano
calibre. This calibre is highly efficient in terms
of velocity, penetration and target effect.

The
efficient recoil management system reduces
the high velocity recoil, making the system
very user friendly without tactical restrictions.
The recoil system consists of an efficient
muzzle brake, a spring buffer and a hydraulic
damper. The barreled action is free to recoil
in the frame of the weapon. NTW-20 is a
manually operated, rotating bolt action
rifle. The barrel is locked by the rotating
bolt that has 6 lugs. The barrel along with
the receiver could recoil inside the chassis
frame against combined hydraulic and pneumatic
damping system. Large two-chamber muzzle
brake also helps to keep recoil at the acceptable
level. NTW-20 is fed from the detachable
box magazine, that is inserted from the
left side and holds 3 rounds.
