Spain confirmed on October 5, 2023, that it will supply Ukraine with an additional six launchers for Hawk anti-aircraft missile systems. The announcement followed discussions between Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy. The supply is intended for Ukraine's air defense and the protection of its critical infrastructure.

This is not the first of its kind. Prior to this latest announcement, Spain had already supplied Ukraine with four Hawk air defense system launchers. The Hawk model being supplied is the MIM-23B version. This system has specific technical specifications: a minimum engagement range of 1.5 kilometers and a maximum range of 35 kilometers. It can engage targets at a minimum altitude of 60 meters and a maximum altitude of 18,000 meters. The payload of the system is a 75 kg high-explosive blast/fragmentation warhead.

The HAWK is a semi-active radar-seeking medium-range surface-to-air defense missile system that was developed in 1952 with the US Army awarding a full-scale development contract to Raytheon for the missile in July 1954.

In addition to the Hawk launchers, Spain has also provided various other military equipment to Ukraine. The list includes 1,370 Instalaza C-90 anti-tank grenade launchers, an undisclosed number of light machine guns, and 700,000 rounds of ammunition. URO VAMTAC 4x4 armored vehicles and 20 M113 vehicles equipped with TWO anti-tank missile systems have also been sent. More recently, Spain announced the supply of an Aspide air defense missile system and five generators.
